Que. What is FSSA, 2006 & why this Act is needed?

Ans: FSSA, 2006 is an Act enacted to keep up with changing needs / requirements of time and to consolidate the laws relating to food and to establish the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. The Act was needed to bring out a single statutory body for food laws, standards setting and enforcement so that there is one agency to deal and no confusion in the minds of consumers, traders, manufacturers and investors which was due to multiplicity of food laws.

Ans: The priorities of the FSSAI is laying down scientific based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import, to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption.

Que. How do I lodge a complaint with the Food Safety Office?

Ans: You can lodge a complaint with the nearest Designated officer / Food Safety Officer in writing. You can contact personally, on telephone, send e-mail or post a letter.

Que. If the district office refuses to take my complaint, what to do?

Ans: You can lodge the complaint to Commissioner Office.

Que. How do I meet the Commissioner, Food Safety?

Ans: You can meet the Commissioner by taking prior appointment on all working days. In case of emergency one can meet the Commissioner on all working days between 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

Que. What does the Food Safety Administration do?

Ans: Food Safety Administration is responsible for ensuring that available Food items are safe and efficacious, and sold at stated price. It also ensures food is unadulterated.

Que. With what sort of food item is the Food Safety Administration concerned?

Ans: Food Safety Administration is concerned with all food items including drinks.

Que. When I purchase a food item from a vendor, what should I do?

Ans: When you purchase food item insist on cash memo. Verify mfg. date, expiry date and price mentioned on label.

Que. If the Vendor refuses to give me a cash memo, what should I do?

Ans: In such a situation lodge a complaint with the nearest Food Safety officer’s office.

Que. What precaution should I take while purchasing a Food item?

Ans:Following precautions should be taken:
Always use food item before the “BEST BEFORE PERIOD” as claimed on the label.
Maintain the storage conditions as mentioned on the label.
Carry out the simple household adulterantsdeduction tests (Part I & Part II ) for suspected food items.

Que. One license or different license for multiple units?

Ans: Different license has to be taken for units with different premises address/different location.

Que.How do I complain about food bought from a shop or restaurant?

Ans: The consumer should complain to the Designated Officer / Food Safety Officer / Food Safety Commissioner of the State.

Ans: The consumer should complain to the Food Safety Officer / Designated Officer / Food Safety Commissioner of the State.

FAQ On Licensing.

Que.Whether there will be a single or different license for the same premises if they are multiple licenses for different product by same FBO?

Ans: There will be different license issued under FSSA as requirement of each product if it is different. So in the same premises if license is being taken for processing of meat, milk & fruits & vegetables, there will be a separate license as these will be done in separate portions & businesses are not connected. However, in case there is fruit & vegetable processing & godown/ store along with it, since these are connected activities, one license is applicable.
